01 · The Contract You Never Read

The Terms of Life

Not the kind buried in a software update — though it works the same way. This one came with being alive. With being part of a living world that has rules, rhythms, and resource flows whether or not anyone handed you the “Terms of Life” Contract.

The living world we are each, and all, a part of — and bound to — has an unwritten Terms & Conditions. The Fine Print we never read before we unwittingly hit the “Accept” button by being birthed into this time in Human History.

And like every Terms & Conditions agreement ever written, this one has a clause about what happens when you violate it.

In the digital world, they call it Account Suspension.

In the living world, the language is different. Soil that stops producing. Rivers that dry up or overflow. Seasons that no longer arrive on schedule. A climate that shifts from “stable” to “unpredictable” to “unliveable.”

That’s the enforcement clause. And it’s already been triggered.

You can’t fix a violation you can’t see, in a contract you didn’t know existed, written in a language you were never taught.

But here’s the thing about fine print: the whole point of it is that you don’t read it. You can’t fix a violation you can’t see, in a contract you didn’t know existed, written in a language you were never taught.

So here, for the first time, is that Fine Print. In plain language.

And a bonus: your Life Account — the operating system you were never given, with a guide to the accounts you didn’t know you needed to have.

02 · Your Life Account

+ All the Accounts Within It

Welcome to your Account of Life. Sit back, take notes, maybe grab a coffee — we’re going to take the tour together.

Something has been missing from our collective operating system manual. Not just a missing chapter — a missing set of books. You intuitively have already sensed the first part: we are not at the top of the system of life on this planet. We are within it. Entangled with it. Dependent on it.

But here’s what the intuition usually misses: your life doesn’t run on one account. It runs on three.

The Fine Print of the living world’s Terms and Conditions Agreement governs all three. And the enforcement clause doesn’t distinguish between them. Overdraw the Common Accounts long enough, and every Personal Account on the planet gets suspended — not just the ones doing the overdrawing.

The droughts, the floods, the anxiety that something is deeply wrong — that’s the violation notification. Your species account is overdrawn.

That’s what we’re living through right now. The droughts, the floods, the anxiety that something is deeply wrong — that’s the violation notification. The living world is telling us: your species account is overdrawn, and the common accounts are approaching suspension.

The problem is, most of us have never seen these accounts. We’ve only ever been given one.

03 · The Only Wallet You Were Given

A Financial Account Is Not a Life.

Here’s what our culture got wrong: it handed us a financial account and called it a life.

Banking, investing, credit scores — these are useful tools. But they are a single account for one ledger inside a system that requires several. Your Financial Account tracks money in, money out. It does not track:

Time consumed. Commons depleted. Life drawn down.

It is a wallet with no interface to the world it depends on. You can have a perfectly balanced Financial Account and still be part of a system that is bankrupting the Common Accounts of soil, water, and breathable air — while simultaneously having your own Life Time Account over charged.

This isn’t a moral failing. It’s structural. The only account you were given to manage your life is the one that can’t see the life it’s embedded in.

To see the complete picture, you need to add the missing ledgers. And to read those ledgers, you need a unit of measurement that works across all three accounts.

04 · The Universal Unit of Account

Time.

Space-time and relativity aside — we all know time. We feel its loss in our bones. We celebrate its gains.

Time is the perfect accounting unit because it is fixed — you cannot inflate or deflate it. It is universal — every person on earth receives the same 24 hours per day. And it is finite — we each have a reasonably fixed lifetime balance to spend.

Your Life Account, at its core, shows you how your fixed Life Time Balance is being spent — how, why, and to whom.

Much of what we experience as financial stress and chronic overwork is not a personal failure. It is a systemic condition.

Our Time Deficits are, more often than not, losses caused by the Systems we operate inside but rarely can see.

Debits against your Personal Account. Debits against the Species Account. And Debits against the Common Accounts of Life — the ones that keep the air breathable and the water drinkable.

The same Financial Systems overcharging your Account are the ones overcharging the Commons Accounts. The mechanism is the same. And the metric that reveals this unauthorised charge is: Time.

The same systems overcharging your account are the ones overcharging the Commons. The metric that reveals it is Time.
05 · The Extension Cord

And Who’s Running It.

Imagine someone ran an extension cord from your home to theirs. You pay the electricity bill every month. They run their operation off of your account. You never knew — because the cord was camouflaged, and the meter outside was broken.

That’s what Extractive Systems do to your Personal Account. You pay. They receive. And the transaction is designed to go unnoticed.

Now look further.

There’s another extension cord — one that runs from your house, and from every house on your street, and from every system your economy depends on — out into the Common Accounts of the living world. The topsoil. The aquifers. The carbon balance.

This cord was not run by you. It was run without your consent — by the systems you were born into, the supply chains you depend on, the financial instruments that structure your economy. You didn’t authorise it. But your life probably runs on what it extracts.

So, there are two “unauthorised draws” happening simultaneously:

⇦ Internal Draw

Systems extracting from your Personal Account — your time, your wages, your purchasing power.

⇨ External Draw

Systems extracting from the Common Accounts through you — using your consumption, your participation, your demand to draw down the Planetary Balance Sheet.

The first makes you poorer. The second makes everything poorer. And neither is visible from inside the Financial Account.

The Financial Account says the economy is growing. The Common Accounts say the foundation is crumbling.
06 · Account Suspended

The Enforcement Clause.

Every platform has Terms of Service. Violate them, and the first thing that happens is a warning. Then a restriction. Then, if you keep going: “Account has been Suspended

The Living World’s Terms of Service work the same way — just on a longer Timeline than your Lifetime.

The warnings have all been posted. Rising CO₂. Collapsing biodiversity. Topsoil loss. Aquifer depletion. Each of these is a notification from the system that manages the Common Accounts: you are in violation.

The restrictions are already being felt. Drought corridors. Flood cycles that no longer follow historical patterns. Fire seasons that now span the year. Growing seasons that shift beneath the feet of farmers who planned for a stable climate.

And the suspension? That’s not a metaphor. An account suspension in the living world means the operating conditions for life — the soil chemistry, the water cycles, the temperature bands — shifting outside the range that supports the life systems we depend on.

Most of us feel this. The anxiety. The sense that something is deeply wrong. But we can’t quite name it, because we’re looking at the wrong account. The Financial Account says the economy is growing. The Common Accounts say the foundation is crumbling.

The disconnect between those two readings is the gap this article and the new account are looking to close.

You don’t need to understand climate science to read the notification. You need the right account — one that shows you what the Financial Account was never designed to show.

07 · The LTE Index Test

Diagnosing Your Personal Life Account

We have created a Life Account Health Test. Surprisingly, the first thing we need to look for is Parasites — things that are extracting from your Life Account, like unauthorised charges you never saw before because you only operated in a “Dollar” unit of account — inside a financial wallet/account.

So, ya, nobody likes parasites. But, here’s what makes biological parasites so effective: ticks and mosquitoes don’t just latch on. They secrete a cocktail of numbing agents that prevent you from feeling the bite — until it’s too late. The parasite’s first job is to make you not notice.

Systemic Time Parasites work the same way. They are embedded in the services, pricing structures, and financial products we use every day. They are normalised. They feel like “just how things are.” Their first line of defence is invisibility.

The Life Time Efficiency Index (LTE) is designed to make them visible.

Imagine a pair of special glasses. With ordinary glasses, you see prices, wages, bills. With the LTE, you see how much of your finite life those prices are actually costing you.

The LTE replaces two inadequate tools. GDP — the macro view that tells us the economy is growing, but not who benefits. And personal finance metrics — the micro view that tells you to spend less, but not that you’re being overcharged.

The LTE Test gives you both lenses at once. It reveals:

How much of your Lifetime you spend on housing, food, transport, and basic necessities. How your city and community compare. Where the largest extractors in your life are hiding.

But it also shows you the other hidden electrical cord — the one running externally. How much of the Common Accounts are being drawn down through you, by the systems you unknowingly participate in. The personal Parasites are the same as the planetary ones.

The test reveals both.

The treatment is switching from the Finance-Only Account to the Life Account.
08 · The Treatment

From Finance Account to Life Account.

Here’s the part most diagnoses leave out: what to actually do.

Your LTE health check results don’t just tell you where the parasites are. They come with Treatments — not personal budgeting tips, but structural alternatives. Systems that are already being built to replace the extractive ones.

The treatment for the internal electrical cord — the one draining your Personal Account — is the same treatment for the external cord draining the Commons Accounts. Because the root cause is the same: a system that prices everything in financial terms and accounts for nothing else.

The treatment is switching from the Finance-Only Account to the Life Account.

This is the Fine Print.
This is your Life Account.

Now — let’s see the numbers.
